Training and Development update
The Leadership Competency Framework
Your Human Resources Team

Welcome to the second edition of the CHSS Human Resources Newsletter!

In our last Newsletter we advised colleagues that a new Training and Development programme was being established in the College, and we can now update you on the progress that has been made during the initial months of the new arrangements being in place.

The numbers of staff registering for the sessions were initially quite modest, but in the run up to Christmas, the numbers have steadily increased. Where numbers have been lower, we have still continued to run the sessions, because colleagues have had a clear need for the advice at the time, and it was easy to adapt the courses to suit the needs of those attending on the day, running shorter sessions, and focusing on the particular concerns of each group – and colleagues very much appreciated that degree of flexibility on our part.

So far there has been more demand for places on topics like appraisal, project management, customer service, and managing difficult people situations, but the numbers are steadily picking up on the other topics in the Programme.

True to our original commitment, the advice sessions have been short, with most of them lasting only a couple of hours. They have been very practical, focusing on the particular concerns of the group in question and colleagues have also fed back to us that the work involved has actually been enjoyable as well as useful to them in their own work situations.

An additional development in these initial weeks has been a direct involvement with some of our Schools, where someone has attended a session in the College office for example on appraisal, and then invited us to work with colleagues in their own School, to give short sessions to staff about to be appraised, or to give advice to staff who are doing appraisals for the first time. Furthermore, going to the School to provide these short sessions has worked really well because we are covering the material quickly, on site, and at times that have suited the staff involved. If you are interested in running some sessions in your own School, just contact your relevant HR Advisor (Lyn Adams Lyn.Adams@ed.ac.uk or Lisa Sutcliffe Lisa.Sutcliffe@ed.ac.uk) or Alan Taylor (Alan.Taylor@ed.ac.uk) to discuss the options.

More sessions are running from January through to June 2008 and we would very much look forward to seeing you at these forthcoming events which are all being run in Room G1 in the College Office at 55 George Square. Information on all of the advice sessions, including course outlines, dates/times and registration details can all be found on the College website: http://www.hss.ed.ac.uk/hr/index.htm.

We hope to see you at some of these advice sessions in the near future.

Over the past few weeks a number of initial briefings, including one for CHSS staff, have been held around the University explaining a draft Leadership Competency Framework, initially targeting all senior support staff in Schools, Colleges and Support Services (grades 8, 9 and 10). The Framework, which describes the attitudes and behaviours which are likely to result in successful leadership in the University, should provide a consistent, co-ordinated and transparent approach to leadership and leadership development for all senior support staff across the University. Lorna Sinclair, Director, Leadership Development Programme, and Alex Jones, Organisational Development Co-ordinator, would like to thank all those who have been to a briefing and for their valuable input.

The Framework is a tool which has been designed through consultation with a variety of key people across the University. It takes into account the University’s Grade profiles, strategic plans, frameworks from other Universities and the public and private sectors and will support and integrate many of the University’s people management processes, eg recruitment, induction, appraisal or development review, succession planning, career development and project team selection and development. A menu of development options is also being collated which is designed to suit individual learning needs and styles.

The use of the Framework is being piloted in a number of areas during December, January and February, and feedback from the pilots will be valuable in refining the Framework and providing guidance on how to make best use of it with the various people management processes. It is anticipated that the Framework, including short training sessions on using it, will be rolled out across the University next semester.

Any comments are welcome, please email alex.jones@ed.ac.uk or lorna.sinclair@ed.ac.uk
