The
Scottish Book Trade Archive Inventory
(SBTAI)
is a searchable index of archival papers held
in Scotland relating to the print and allied
trades. The first phase of the project pilot
was completed in March 2006 by Ross Alloway
with support from the Arts and Humanities Research
Council.
To date the SBTAI covers the nineteenth century
and includes printers, publishers, and papermakers.
Funding is presently being sought to extend
these records and to add material for the seventeenth,
eighteenth, and twentieth centuries.
Important Search Information:
The archive can be searched in two ways: by
typing keywords into the search box at the top
of each page (for example 'Constable'), or by
searching alphabetically using the letters at
the top and bottom of each page. If using the
latter method, please be aware that Christian
names precede surnames. For example, if
you want to find archival information relating
to 'Archibald Constable', look under the letter
'A' rather than 'C'. For 'T. and A. Constable',
look under 'T'. The list
of firms and individuals may be useful if
you choose this method.
Detailed
information about the relevant archives - including
location, references, and descriptions - is
available for many of the entries and can be
found by following the hyperlinks. If your Internet
Explorer browser blocks any links, please select
"Allow blocked Content" after clicking
on the pop-up bar at the top of the page.
Comments and questions regarding the content
of the database should be addressed to
Dr Ross Alloway.
Many of the descriptions are based on the records
of the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) and the
Guide to Manuscript Collections at the National
Library of Scotland and are used with kind permission.
