Description |
'An Historical Account of Printing in Scotland, During Two Centuries; Being Annals of her Literature, from 1507 to 1707; With an appendix comprehending, The History of Paper making, The history of Type founding in Scotland; and. an Essay on the Copyright of Authors', by George Chalmers, the antiquary. This is the manuscript which Chalmers submitted for publication to Cadell and Davies in 1817, who however rejected it. It is based on the notes compiled largely by his nephew James, Adv. MSS. 16.2.21-2. For the use which later bibliographers have made of the work, see the catalogue of these MSS.

George Johnstone, fl 1810-1816, was a bookseller in Dumfries and publisher of the Dumfries and Galloway Courier, 1810-16. He went bankrupt in 1816 and was discharged in 1821. |

History |
George Outram & Co was the publisher and printer of The Glasgow Herald, The Bulletin (founded 1876), The Evening Times and a number of weekly periodicals. It was incorporated as a limited liability company, George Outram & Co Ltd, in 1903 . The firm were pioneers in the use of high-speed printing and installed new rotary presses in 1936. In 1973 George Outram & Company Limited was a subsidiary of Scottish and universal Investments Limited, whose parent company was Lonrho Limited. The company still existed in 2002 although in a dormant state.
