Course Description

This is the Semester 2 core course for the MSc in Material Cultures and the History of the Book. Taught within the University's Centre for Research Collections, this course provides an introduction to a range of issues surrounding the conservation, management, and display of special collections, with particular emphasis on manuscript and printed materials.

Issues to be covered include cataloguing, conservation techniques, digitisation, collection management, and display and exhibitions. Seminars (which will run for 2 hours a week) will be taught by experts from the University and beyond. Field trips to local collections will be included.

Assessment will be based on a course essay of 4000 words, selected from a range of prescribed topics, to be submitted by the end of Semester 2.

 

Course schedule

All seminars take place on the 5th floor of the University Library between 10-12am.
