Ruth McAdams is an M.Phil.
candidate in the school of Literatures, Languages, and
Cultures. She is writing a thesis on the role of the
posthumous editions of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels
in the growth of Scott's literary reputation between
1832, the year of his death, and 1871, the cenentary
of his birth.
Using the
1829-1833 "Magnum Opus" Edition of the Waverley Novels
as a point of departure, Scott's publishers made a series
of important changes to the paratextual presentation
of the novels in various editions published after Scott's
death.
This project
will trace these changes and show how they bring about
an evolution in Scott's reputation during this crucial
period, the implications of which are still important
to the way that Sir Walter Scott's place in the literary
canon is understood even today.
