Two volumes
of The Edinburgh History of the
Book in Scotland were launched on St Andrew's
Day, November 30th 2007, at The National Library of
Scotland. Volume 3: Ambition
and Industry 1800-1880, edited by Bill Bell,
and Volume 4: Professionalism
and Diversity 1880-2000, edited by David Finkelstein
and Alistair McCleery, were the first of four volumes
in the series to appear. The other volumes are
scheduled for publication next year.
Brian Hillyard
welcomed a packed audience to the event, saying how
pleased the National Library was to host the launch,
going on to say that the publication of these volumes
was bound to stimulate further research and that the
National Library looked forward to the role it will
have in helping to provide the means for this to happen.
In the speech
that followed, Tom Devine, Sir William Fraser Chair
of Scottish History at the University of Edinburgh,
spoke of the importance of the cultural turn in historiography
and remarked on the way in which these volumes were
helping to map out an important new direction in the
reappraisal of Scottish history.
Bill Bell,
the project's General Editor, thanked the many individuals
who had made the project possible and paid tribute to
the production values of Edinburgh University Press,
saying the design of the books represented 'all that
was good about academic publishing.'
Catriona Murray,
head of marketing at EUP, thanked the event's sponsors,
which included The National Library, The University
of Edinburgh, and Napier University, and said how delighted
the Press was to be associated with such a prestigious
project.
